Setting up a YouTube account to upload videos to
To upload videos to YouTube you’ll need:
- A Google account. All UTS staff and students have a Google account that is linked to their UTS email address (e.g. stu.dent@student.uts.edu.au).
- An active YouTube channel. Your Google account includes a YouTube Channel, but you must activate your Channel before you can upload videos to YouTube.
- If you need to upload videos longer than 15 minutes you’ll need to verify your account after you’ve created your channel.
- To avoid Copyright issues it’s best to change your Channel’s country to Australia.
Logging into YouTube and activating your account
To log into your Google account and activate your channel please perform the following steps.
Important: These steps must be performed on the desktop version of the YouTube website (www.youtube.com). Accounts cannot be activated on YouTube’s mobile website (m.youtube.com).
Step 1: Go to www.youtube.com and Sign In. If the sign in option is not immediately visible then you’re already logged in. If you’re already signed in using your UTS email address please skip to step 4.
If you’re signed in using a non-UTS email please sign out and sign in using your UTS email address.
Step 2: Provide your UTS email address when prompted for an email address, then click next. Do not use the Create account option
Step 3: You will be redirected to a UTS login page. Login using your UTS Student ID and password when prompted. You will be redirected to the YouTube home page
Step 4: Click on My Channel to activate your channel
Step 5: You’ll be asked to use YouTube as… <Your Name>. Click OK to continue. Your channel is now activated
Verifying your account
YouTube restricts the duration of uploaded videos to 15 minutes for non-verified accounts. In order to upload videos longer than 15 minutes you need to verify your account. Verification is done via a once-off text message or automated voice call.
Verification also gives you the ability to add you own video watermark and custom thumbnail (the still image you see before pressing the play button).
Changing your Channel’s country to Australia
Specifying your Channel’s country helps avoid copyright problems. YouTube sets the default country to Afghanistan (the first country on the alphabetical list).
To change the Channel’s country to Australia please perform the following steps:
Step 1: Log on to YouTube as shown above
Step 2: Click on the icon for your account, located in the top right hand corner of the page
Step 3: Select Creator Studio (see above)
Step 4: Select Channel (see above)
Step 5: Select Advanced (see above)
Step 6: Select Australia from the Country drop down menu (see above), then click Save (not shown). Your channel’s location will change to Australia.
Important: Changing the Country setting found at the bottom of each YouTube page will NOT change a Channel’s location.
Changing this country setting will change the location that the user wants to view videos from (e.g. the user would change it to Portugal if they wanted to see videos from Portugal).
