Turnitin submission error – Gradebook was not modified

This known issue is closed due to the decommissioning of Blackboard on the 31st of August, 2021

Target audience:

Students and Instructors

Description:

When a student submits their Turnitin assignment, they may encounter an error message:

“The paper was submitted successfully to Turnitin, but the Blackboard Gradebook was not modified. The Blackboard Gradebook does not currently reflect this assignment’s submission status” (see image below):

Turnitin error

Turnitin error

This error is caused when communications between UTSOnline and Turnitin fails. Specifically, the communication that updates the UTSOnline Grade Centre to indicate a Turnitin submission has been received. The communication failure may occur within a UTSOnline site that has been copied from another site, or if the site Instructor has made any changes to the Grade Centre column. Please note that a student’s Turnitin submission is unaffected by this issue and will properly be submitted to Turnitin regardless of the error.

Status:

Turnitin support is working with the UTSOnline vendor to minimize communication issues. There are two known workarounds for Instructors.

Workaround 1:

An Instructor can utilise the Sync Grades link to resend Turnitin grades or submissions to the Grade Centre for a specific Turnitin assignment. To access the Sync Grades link, navigate to the site control panel, expand the Subject Tools menu, and select Turnitin Assignments. This will open the Turnitin Assignments page which will contain a Sync Grades link for each Turnitin assignment in that UTSOnline site (see image below):

Workaround 2:

An Instructor can log a service request to the Learning and Teaching Systems team so that they can advise Turnitin support to resend the Grade Centre communications. This workaround will take significantly longer to complete and should only be utilised if Workaround 1 does not work.
