UTS Avoiding Plagiarism
This guide is for users who need to set up an Avoiding Plagiarism Quiz link in a UTSOnline subject site
Instructors and Subject Coordinators can create a link in their UTSOnline subject site to an Avoiding Plagiarism quiz. By creating this link in UTSOnline, you can take advantage of a student’s Avoiding Plagiarism quiz results being automatically pushed to the UTSOnline subject site Grade Centre.

Grading *
When creating a link to the Avoiding Plagiarism Quiz from your UTSOnline subject site, you can enable Grading (see image below):

The Grading settings when creating/editing an Avoiding Plagiarism link
When you enable Grading for your Avoiding Plagiarism Quiz link, a new Grade Column will be automatically created in the Grade Centre of your UTSOnline subject site. When a student opens the Avoiding Plagiarism Quiz from your UTSOnline subject site and completes the quiz, the results for that student will be pushed to the Grade Centre automatically.
What numeric value should I use for the Points Possible field?
The Points Possible field expects any numerical value that will be used as the maximum number of points a student can receive in the UTSOnline subject site Grade Column that was created for the Avoiding Plagiarism quiz. You can specify whatever value you want in the Points Possible field. This is because the result that is pushed to the UTSOnline subject site Grade Column is based on a percentage of a student’s Avoiding Plagiarism Quiz score. Below are two examples that illustrate how this works:
- Example 1: An Instructor configures the Points Possible field to equal 10 when creating the Avoiding Plagiarism Quiz link in their UTSOnline subject site. A student then completes the Avoiding Plagiarism Quiz and receives a score of 20 out of 25, or 80%. When the student’s result is pushed to the Grade Column, the Grade Column score will be published as 8 out of 10 i.e. 80%.
- Example 2: An Instructor configures the Points Possible field to equal 50 when creating the Avoiding Plagiarism Quiz link in their UTSOnline subject site. Two students attempt the same Avoiding Plagiarism Quiz but receive a different set of questions. Student A gets 16 out of 20. Student B gets 20 out of 25. In the Grade Column, both students will receive a score of 40.
Deleting the Grade column
When deleting an assessment item in a UTSOnline subject site, the associated Grade column is automatically deleted. However, deleting the Avoiding Plagiarism Quiz link in your UTSOnline subject site will not automatically delete the associated Grade column. Deleting the Avoiding Plagiarism Grade column has to be performed manually by an Instructor. For instructions on manually deleting a Grade column, please refer to the Full Grade Centre help page.
Using the Avoiding Plagiarism Quiz to manage content access *
You can take advantage of the Avoiding Plagiarism tool by using a student’s Avoiding Plagiarism quiz result to control that student’s access to specific content in your UTSOnline subject site. This is achieved through the UTSOnline Adaptive Release tool. The Adaptive Release tool allows Instructors to set up rules a student needs to meet in order for that student to access specific content in a UTSOnline subject site. One of the rules that can be created through the Adaptive Release tool is based on a student’s grade in the Full Grade Centre of a UTSOnline subject site.
Below is an example of creating a rule in the Adaptive Release tool to only allow students access to a Turnitin assignment who have achieved a score of 80% or more in the Avoiding Plagiarism quiz.
